Siraj Ajmali was born on November 8, 1966, in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, India, at the famous Sufi shrine of Dargah Shah Wali Sikanderpur, in the home of Syed Jamaluddin Ajmali, a schoolteacher. This shrine has long followed the teachings of the Qadri Sufi order. Siraj completed his high school at Gandhi Inter College, Sikanderpur Ballia, and his intermediate studies at Majidiya Islamia Inter College, Allahabad, in the science stream. He later enrolled in the B.Sc. program at CSP Degree College. During this time, he also joined the Urdu daily “Safeer-e-Nau” published from Allahabad for a monthly salary of 300 rupees. While living at Daira Shah Ajmal, Siraj received his education and literary training from his grandfather, Maulana Shah Syed Ahmad Ajmali, the Sajjada Nasheen, and his spiritual guide. His uncle, Syed Akmal Ajmali, and his younger brother, Maulana Syed Afzal Ajmali, played a key role in his education. Siraj Ajmali later studied for medical exams like CPMT and PMT but was not interested in these fields. then He completed his B.A. through private studies from Kanpur University. In 1986, he moved to Delhi for higher studies and worked in the Hindi department of the monthly digest “Huda” for 700 rupees per month. From 1987 to 1997, he worked as a casual announcer in the Urdu service of All India Radio. He also joined the M.A. (Urdu) program at Delhi University, where he completed his degree in 1989 and passed the JRF exam in the same year. Siraj completed his Ph.D. under the guidance of Professor Qamar Rais at Delhi University. He is currently a Professor in the Urdu Department at Aligarh Muslim University.
