In his teens, Shaukat Thanwi wrote a ghazal and after quite some struggle, managed to get it published in the monthly "Tirchhi Nazar". One of the couples in that Ghazal was, 'Hamesha Ghair ki izzat tiri mafil mein hoti hai…tire kuuche mein jaa kar hum zaliil-o-KHwaar hote hain'. Which this couplet passed the eyes of Shaukat's father he became extremely angry and shouted at Shaukat's mother after reciting this verse that,'Main puuchhta huun ye aawaara aakhir us kuuche mein jaata hii kyun hai? (Why does he go to that street?)', to which his mother timidly responded, 'Ghalati se chalaa gayaa hoga (Perhaps Naively?)'
hamesha ġhair kī izzat tirī mahfil meñ hotī hai
tire kūche meñ jā kar ham zalīl-o-ḳhvār hote haiñ
hamesha ghair ki izzat teri mahfil mein hoti hai
tere kuche mein ja kar hum zalil-o-KHwar hote hain
