The publication of Ma’arif Aligarh began on July 1, 1898. It was edited by Maulvi Waheeduddin Saleem Panipati. One of the key objectives of this magazine, as stated in its aims and guidelines, was: "To expand the scope of Urdu language and literature by including scholarly, philosophical, ethical, religious, social, and historical articles. Rare and valuable articles from English, Arabic, and Turkish books, newspapers, and magazines would be translated to provide Muslims with intellectual enlightenment, refined education, and the promotion of culture and civilization."
