    bastī bastī DhūñDhiye ab ek chehra āshnā

    yaañ to sab ko apnī pahchān dūbhar ho chalī

    andhe bahroñ ke nagar meñ kaun kis āshnā

    be-basīrat ham the maanā muḳhlisoñ bhiiḌ meñ

    tum ne pahchānā kisī ko tum ne paayā āshnā

    sard-mehrī ridā oḌhe hue hai bashar

    kyā koī apnā shanāsā kyā koī nā-āshnā

    ham ko sab ma.alūm hai hone ko hai kyā is ke baad

    tum tamāshā-gar ho sāhab ham tamāshā-āshnā

    koī to aisā bhī ho 'arshad' jise maiñ kah sakūñ

    merī shaḳhsiyyat pārakh mere ġham āshnā

    TuTte girte nagar mein sab hue na-ashna

    andhe bahron ke nagar mein kaun kis ka aashna

    sard-mehri ki rida oDhe hue hai bashar

    kya koi apna shanasa kya koi na-ashna

    hum ko sab malum hai hone ko hai kya is ke baad

    tum tamasha-gar ho sahab hum tamasha-ashna

    koi to aisa bhi ho 'arshad' jise main kah sakun

    meri shaKHsiyyat ka parakh mere gham ka aashna
