Majid Lahori, (full name: Abdul Majid Chauhan), was born in Gujrat (West Punjab) in 1913. He spent most of his life in Lahore and wrote several articles for literary journals and newspapers. After the partition, he moved to Karachi from where he started his bi-monthly journal, Namakdaan, which brought him wide popularity and fame. He died in Karachi in 1957.
Majid was a humorist by instinct and temperament. He had a "goodly," figure which further enhanced the humorous potential of his personality. He is the poet of the common people, and his subjects, like those of Nazir Akbarabadi, are drawn from the common stuff of life. His poems hold a mirror to the social and political situation of his time and are intended to expose the idiocies and idiosyncrasies of contemporary life. Moral and mental degradation of the ruling class, the cunning of their vote-catching techniques, and the exploitation of democracy for selfish ends are some of the targets of his satirical barbs, made palatable with a coating of humor. Majid has also written successful parodies of several writers including Iqbal, Ghalib, Nazir, Hafeez, Momin, Akhtar Sheerani, etc. By adopting the style and even sometimes, the words and phrases of the earlier writers, he points to the gap that lies between the idealism of the past and the pettiness of the contemporary world. One has to compare Majid's Firmaan-e-Iblees with Iqbal's Firmaan-e-Khuda to get an idea of the descent that we have made from the highlands of the earlier days to the lowlands of the modern materialistic age. Or, read Majid's Modern Aadmi Nama which is an interesting parody of Nazir Akbarabadi's Aadmi Nama.
