Shafiq Jaunpuri’s poetry holds a mirror to social, political, and cultural issues of his times. This is clearly noticeable not only in his nazms but also his ghazals. He drew upon the classical diction but used it to express contemporary concerns which added a respectable dimension to his poetry and accounted for his popularity as a poet.
He was born Waliuddin on 26 May, 1902. As he was required to fend for himself and his family at an early age in is life, he could not pursue his education. However, he did not lag behind in attending to the call of the muse and wrote his poems with zeal and commitment. He sought counselling on his poetry from at least three mentors like Hafeez Jaunpuri, Nooh Narawi, and Hasrat Mohani. Several volumes of his poetry were published which include Tajalliyaat, Baang-e-Jaras, Hurmat-e-Ishq, Shafaq, Tooba, Safeena, Fanoos, Khirman, Shaana, and Nay. Shafiq also wrote two travelogues—Hijaz Namah and Khatim which were read with interest for their style of presentation.
