Hakim Mazhar Subhan Usmani, a known Unani physician and former vice-chairman of National Minorities Commission, was born in Samadpur, a small village in district Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh.
After obtaining his Faazil e Tibb degree from state Takmeel ut Tibb Unani Medical College, Lucknow in 1959 he started his career as lecturer in Jamia Tibbia (Hamdard Tibbi college) and later on joined Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College delhi, and retired as head of the department of medicine (moaalijaat)
A poet par excellence, a devoted academic and a master physician, Hakim sahab was honoured with several awards and honours in his lifetime. Because of his expertise in different fields he was also associated with several governmental and non-governmental organisations. He was a member of the governing body of Central Council For Research in Unani Medicine(CCRUM), member of Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy and Vice-chairman of National Minorities Commission.
