One of the more popular women poets of Urdu, Shahjehan Bano was born at Gwalior in 1937. She spent her childhood in Delhi but shifted to Lucknow later. Her poetry blends the best elements of the Delhi and Lucknow schools of poetry which found a receptive audience in the mushairas where she recited her poetry with great verve. Interestingly she attended mushairas at a time when it was quite unimaginable for women to do so. Once she entered this domain, she acquired a place for herself both on the merit of her poetry as well as her mellifluous style of rendition.
