ik ajnabī ke haath meñ de kar hamārā haath

lo saath chhoḌne lagā āḳhir ye saal bhī

kitnā jhuk kar kise salām karo

sirf zabāñ naqqālī se baat na ban pā.egī 'hafīz'

dil par kaarī choT lage to 'mīr' lahja aa.e hai

sirf zaban ki naqqali se baat na ban paegi 'hafiz'

dil par kari choT lage to 'mir' ka lahja aae hai

rañg āñkhoñ ke liye hai dimāġhoñ ke liye

phuul ko haath lagāne zarūrat kyā hai

rang aankhon ke liye bu hai dimaghon ke liye

phul ko hath lagane ki zarurat kya hai

kyā jaane kyā sabab hai ki chāhtā hai aaj

rote jaa.eñ sāmne tum ko biThā ke ham

kya jaane kya sabab hai ki ji chahta hai aaj

rote hi jaen samne tum ko biTha ke hum

kabhī kabhī hameñ duniyā hasīn lagtī thī

kabhī kabhī tirī āñkhoñ meñ pyaar dekhte the

kabhi kabhi hamein duniya hasin lagti thi

kabhi kabhi teri aankhon mein pyar dekhte the

ab khul ke kaho baat to kuchh baat banegī

ye daur-e-ishārāt-o-kināyāt nahīñ hai

ab khul ke kaho baat to kuchh baat banegi

ye daur-e-ishaaraat-o-kinayat nahin hai

har sahārā be-amal ke vāste be-kār hai

aañkh khole na jab koī ujālā kyā kare

har sahaara be-amal ke waste be-kar hai

aankh hi khole na jab koi ujala kya kare

mohabbat chīḳh bhī ḳhāmoshī bhī naġhma bhī na.ara bhī

ye ik mazmūn hai kitne unvānoñ se vābasta

mohabbat chiKH bhi KHamoshi bhi naghma bhi nara bhi

ye ek mazmun hai kitne hi unwanon se wabasta

mai-ḳhāne samt na dekho

jaane kaun nazar aa jaa.e

mai-KHane ki samt na dekho

jaane kaun nazar aa jae

shaiḳh qātil ko masīhā kah ga.e

mohtaram baat ko jhuTlā.eñ kyā

shaiKH qatil ko masiha kah gae

mohtaram ki baat ko jhuTlaen kya

abhī se hosh uḌe maslahat-parastoñ ke

abhī maiñ bazm meñ aayā abhī kahāñ bolā

abhi se hosh uDe maslahat-paraston ke

abhi main bazm mein aaya abhi kahan bola

rasā hoñ na hoñ naale ye nāloñ muqaddar hai

'hafīz' aañsū bahā kar to halkā kar liyā maiñ ne

rasa hon ya na hon nale ye nalon ka muqaddar hai

'hafiz' aansu baha kar ji to halka kar liya main ne

haa.e vo naġhma jis muġhannī

gaatā jaa.e rotā jaa.e

hae wo naghma jis ka mughanni

gata jae rota jae

bazm-e-takallufāt sajāne meñ rah gayā

maiñ zindagī ke naaz uThāne meñ rah gayā
